Talking about sin and repentence, important ?

Many who attend church regularly know this. But I still think that the subject should be addressed. If we go further back in time, there was a lot of talk about sin and repentance. That is not the case today, and not at the same level either. Which surprises me because that's what Jesus and the apostles actually preached about. Even John, who baptized Jesus, preached repentance for the kingdom of heaven is near.

Another aspect of this preaching of sin and repentance is that in the late hour we live in I have actually encountered those who don´t want to hear sermons on sin or even talk of sin. Why this surprises me is because today it´s hardly even preached or talked about. So where have these few heard of sin so much that it´s up to their neck.

Sin, in short, is everything we say or do that is not pleasing to God. That is why God gave us the commandments. Scripture shows us who He is and what He allows / forbids us, if we want to be called God´s children.

It's so easy to blame what we do or say on, Satan made me do it. If there´s anything that can be called a human trait, it´s blameshifting which starts already when we are really small children.

Blameshifting or take responsibility for what you have done? Most of us who are parents start by teaching the children to say sorry, because it does not come by itself. I also wanna believe that we teach children to take responsibility for what they´ve done.

So if we teach our children about what´s right and wrong, teach them to say I´m sorry and to take responsibility for what they have done; How, then, can we have such a hard time hearing about sin and repentance? We expect our children to listen to what we say, but we refuse to listen to God who created us. That´s just crazy!

There are many areas where we teach children how to act in order to become good adults. But a good adult can also make mistakes. Do most adults stop behaving well and stop saying sorry when they hurt someone? I don´t think so, not in most cases at least. The exception is if someone hurts us, then some people can go back to the caveman stage. But many non-Christians are good people from a human perspective.

Why are sin and repentance important to us? For the life of a Christian, it is a total necessity. It is necessary because;

1. We cannot be saved if we don´t ask for forgiveness and at least try to do things differently, after we´ve asked for forgiveness.
2. Continue to keep the way open between us and the God that we believe in.
3. The wages of sin is death.

We are not talking about the physical death here, but about the eternal death. Man is created in the image of God, God is an eternal being. Thus man is created for eternal life or death. Heaven or hell!

The choice we make down here affects us in a positiv or negativ way. The result is either eternal life or eternal death. It goes without saying that Satan does not want us to understand the difference. But why people wouldn´t want to understand isn´t as obvious to me. An eternity of life versus death = the result of sin versus repentance.

We already see from the beginning of the Bible, how sin creates a gap between us and God. In order for us to be pure before Him, a sacrifice of blood was needed, which was because of the evil that we humans have done, hence animal sacrifice. Then later came the real true sacrifice, Jesus, God's own son who died for all sins and opened the way to have contact with the God who created us.

God gave us commandments to show us, what's allowed and not. The commandments would probably be supported by the vast majority of people with a somewhat healthy attitude.

1. You shall have no other gods before me.
2. Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
Nr 1 and 2 clatches big time with a lot of folks. Need to have a God over you who rules. I can do it myself, comes up in me. Our reaction many times are behaving like any 3-year-old.

3. Remember to keep the Sabbath day holy.
This commandment were made for our sakes, whatever day we shose to take frees is less important in the new testament time, we get to choose ourselves. But the idea with this is that we need to rest. Man is not made to work all the time, we need to rest too.

4. Show respect for your father and mother
In cases where they are not drunkerds, drug addicts or use the family as living beating objects, it is not a bad idea to treat mom and dad well.

5. You shall not kill.
6. You shall not commit adultery.
7. You shall not steal.
The vast majority of people would agree with this. If a person is unfaithful, it hurts their partner, and most people don´t wanna get hurt. I doubt there is anyone, other than those doing these things tat are ok with it.

8. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
9. You shall have no desire for your neighbor's house
10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor's.

The same is true with these three, most people wouldn´t like that someone spread lies about them, they wouldn´t like if others were jealous of them However, behaving in the same way against others seems easy for many.

God has not imposed on us a lot of commandments that we cannot keep. Most of them are just things we teach our own children. So how can we have such copious difficulty in hearing the word sin? And why have we Christians bowed down and stopped talking about sin? Jesus said;

Matt 22: 37-40 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.

Jesus even takes up God´s way of looking at sin;

5. Matt 5:21-22 You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.

1 Joh 3:15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

6. Matt 5:27-28 You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

8. Matt 5:33-37 You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’ But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.

God goes deeper into what sin is. It´s not enough if we actually do it, just thinking certain sins and You´ve comitted them in your heart. Sin is born in our hearts, and the scripture tells us;

Jer 17:9 The heart is decietful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?

Sin is born in the heart, we speak it with our mouths and we´ve sinned. There is nothing supernatural or strange involved in sinning. Yet many act as if there is. The same people who teach their children to obey do not want to obey anyone but themselves. It's like we're just waiting to get big, so we can decide for ourselves.

Matt 15:10-11 And he called the people to him and said to them, Hear and understand: it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.

Matt 15:16-20 Are you also still without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled? But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a person.

Jesus gives it to us straight, sin is born in the heart. When we sin, whether we do not speak it or we do, repentance is necessary. Just as we teach our children to do as what they´re told, and not mimic us. The truth is that even though we are good in our own eyes, goodness isn´t always what comes out of us.

How can we refrain from talking about sin and repentance, when it is so central to our faith? This is talked about, over and over again in the scriptures. The prophets told the king and the people to repent, make amends. John the Baptist preached the same thing, Jesus and the apostles as well. In fact, if we read Christian history, sin and repentance were in the forefront, this is what was preached.

Today on te other hand, there´s no talk at all of sin and repentance. How tragically mischievous we have become. We agree with everyting because the trut is we´re to afraid of going gainst te flow. And if, contrary to expectation, we speak of sin, then homosexuality is brought up. As if that´s the ultimate sin, or the only one, for that matter. But it is only a sin among all others.

I can´t help but wonder, if a lot of Christians shose that as an example to somehow justify their own sin? A case of, I'm not as miserably fallen as that one. Maybe I'm wrong.

Sin came into the world with the fall of Adam and Eve, and it´s triving today. ´Cause of the fall, we are all sinners. If we are all sinners then why not talk about it, let people hear and have a chance to repent.

Sometimes I wonder about the 7 deadly sins of the Catholic Church, I´ve always had a hard time with that term. According to the standard list, they are; 1. pride, 2. greed, 3. anger, 4. envy, 5. lust, 6. gluttony, and 7. laziness, which contradict the seven heavenly virtues. This classification has its origins in the Desert Fathers, especially Evagrius Ponticus.

What do te bible tell us?

1 Kor 6:9-11 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Note that God actually also lists those who slander on the list of sins. How many of us Christians have ever spoken ill of someone behind their backs? But when we point out sin, then we resort to homosexuality, that which deviates properly. But according to God, we deviate even if it´s just a small thing like talking about someone behind teir back.

What are the consequences of sin? The result of sin is death, i.e. we end up in the eternal fire and are tormented forever. This terrible place was originally intended for Satan and the rest of the rebellious angels, not for us humans. Jesus died and bled for the human race.

In His wounds and the victory at Calvary there is forgiveness of sins. We just need to believe it. And Jesus took all the sins upon himself, every one of them. So forgiveness exists for everything, the whole point of mortal sins are that they are unforgivable. But Jesus explains to us;

Matt 12:31-32 Jesus sade Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

We can be forgiven of all sins, unless we blaspheme the Holy Spirit. Let us as Christians hold the banner high and speak again of sin and repentance. The subject can´t be so sensitive that we can´t even talk about it. Without sin, no forgiveness is needed, and we are not without sin. The Scripture tells us;

Rom 3:10-12 “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.”

We are all of the same scrap and grain, (as we would say in Sweden) all sinners, sitting in the same boat, whether we are saved or not. Their sin, who aren´t saved, is no worse than ours. If that´s what we´re imaginening, Satan has managed to dupe us real properly.

In the eyes of a holy God, we all fall short. He does not count anyone as good. Therefore, His Son Jesus needed to suffer and die in our place, so that through Jesus' sacrifice we could have eternal life. But we choose. How can we choose life or death if no one preaches it to us? We have to talk, we can not be silent. Again, the bands of our tongues must be loosened and speak of sin, forgiveness, and repentance.

Tala om synd och omvändelse, viktigt ?

Många som går regelbundet i kyrkan vet och kan detta. Men jag anser ändå att ämnet borde tas upp. Går vi längre bakåt i tiden så talades det mycket om synd och omvändelse. Så är det inte idag, inte på samma nivå heller. Vilket ar förvånat mig eftersom det är det som Jesus och apostlarna faktiskt predikade om. Även Johannes, som döpte Jesus, predikade omvänd er för himmelriket är nära.

En annan aspekt av detta predikande av synd och omvändelse är att jag i den sena timme vi lever i faktiskt stött på såna som inte vill höra predikningar om synd eller ens tal om synd. Varför detta förvånar mig är just för att det idag inte ens predikas eller talas om detta. Så var har dessa få hört talas om synd så mycket så det står dem upp i halsen.

Synd, är kort och gott allting som vi säger eller gör som inte är välbehagligt inför Gud. Det är varför Gud gav oss budorden. Skriften visar oss vem Han är och vad Han tillåter / förbjuder, om vi vill kallas för Guds barn.

Det är så enkelt att skylla på att Satan fick oss att göra det, vad än nu det råkar vara. Är det något som också kan kallas för ett mänskligt drag så är det att skylla ifrån oss och det börjar redan när vi är riktigt små barn.

Skylla ifrån sig eller ta ansvar för det man gjort? De flesta av oss som är föräldrar börjar med att lära barnen säga förlåt, för det kommer inte heller av sig självt. Jag vill också tro att vi lär barnen ta ansvar för det som de gjort.

Så om vi lär våra barn vad som är rätt och fel, lär dem säga förlåt och lär dem ta ansvar för det som de gjort; Hur kan vi då ha så svårt för att höra talas om synd och omvändelse? Vi förväntar oss att våra barn ska lyssna på vad vi säger, men vi vägrar lyssna på Gud som har skapat oss. Så knäppt!

Det är ju många områden som vi lär barn hur de ska agera för att bli bra vuxna. Men en bra vuxen kan också göra fel. Slutar de flesta vuxna bete sig bra och slutar säga förlåt när de sårat någon? Jag tror inte det, inte i de flesta fallen i alla fall. Undantaget är om någon sårar oss, då kan en del gå tillbaka till grottmänniskostadiet. Men många icke kristna är goda människor från ett mänskligt perspektiv sett.

Varför är synd och omvändelse viktigt för oss? För en kristens liv är det en total nödvändighet. Det är nödvändigt för att;

1. Vi kan inte bli frälsta om vi inte ber om förlåt och åtminstone försöker att göra saker annorlunda efter att vi bett om förlåt.

2. Fortsätta att hålla vägen öppen mellan oss och den Gud vi tror på.

3. Syndens lön är döden.

Vi talar här inte om den fysiska döden, utan om en evig död. Människan är skapad till Guds avbild, Gud är en evig varelse. Alltså är människan skapade till evigt liv eller död. Himmel eller helvete!

Det val vi gör här nere påverkar oss positivt eller negativt. Resultatet är antingen evigt liv eller evig död. Att Satan inte vill att vi ska förstå skillnaden är väl självklart. Men varför människor inte vill förstå det är för mig inte lika självklart. Liv kontra död i evighet = resultatet av synd kontra omvändelse.

Vi ser redan från bibelns början ur synden skapar en klyfta mellan oss och Gud. För att vi ska vara rena inför Honom behövdes ett offer av blod, som skylde det onda som vi människor gjort, därav djuroffer. Sedan kom då senare in det riktiga sanna offret, Jesus, Guds egen son som dog för allas synder och öppnade vägen till kontakt med den Gud som skapat oss.

Så Gud gav oss budord för att visa oss, det är är tillåtet, det där är det inte. Budorden torde de allra flesta någotsånär sunda människor kunna ställa sig bakom.

Tio Guds bud 2 Mos 20:1-17

1. Du skall inte ha andra gudar vid sidan av mig.
2. Du skall inte missbruka Herrens, din Guds namn, ty Herren kommer inte att lämna den ostraffad som missbrukar hans namn.

Nummer 1 och 2 här skär det sig för många. Behöva ha en Gud över sig som styr. Jag kan själv, kommer upp i mig. Precis som vilken 3-åring som helst, är vår reaktion till detta.

3. Tänk på att hålla sabbatsdagen helig.

Detta budord är ditlagt för vår skull, vilken dag vi sedan har ledigt på är mindre viktigt i nya förbundet, vi väljer själv. Men tanken med detta är att vi behöver vila. Människan är inte gjorde för att jobba hela tiden, vi behöver vila också.

4. Visa aktning för din far och din mor

I de fall de inte är suputer, drogmissbrukare eller använder familjen som slagträ, så är det inte en dålig idé att behandla mamma och pappa väl.

5. Du skall inte dräpa.
6. Du skall inte begå äktenskapsbrott.
7. Du skall inte stjäla.

De allra flesta skriver under på detta. Om en person är otrogen så sårar den sin partner, vilket de flesta inte vill vara med om. Jag tvivlar på att det finns någon enda, utom de som håller på med detta, som faktiskt är ok med detta.

8. Du skall inte vittna falskt mot din nästa.
9. Du skall inte ha begär till din nästas hus

10. Du skall inte ha begär till din nästas hustru, eller hans slav eller slavinna, hans oxe eller hans åsna eller något annat som tillhör din nästa.

Samma sak gäller med dessa tre, de flesta skulle inte gilla att någon spred lögner om dem, de skulle inte gilla att de var avundsjuka på dem Däremot göra detsamma mot andra har många lätt för.

Gud har inte lagt på oss en mängd bud som vi inte kan klara av att hålla. De flesta av dem är rent av sånt som vi lär våra egna barn. Så hur kan vi ha så kopiöst svårt med att höra ordet synd? Och varför har vi kristna böjt oss och slutat tala om synd? Jesus sade;

Matt 22: 37-40 Du ska älska Herren din Gud av hela ditt hjärta och av hela din själ och av hela ditt förstånd. Det är det största och första budet. Sedan kommer ett som liknar det: Du ska älska din nästa som dig själv. På dessa två bud hänger hela lagen och profeterna.

Jesus går även in på hur Guds syn på synd är;

5. Matt 5:21-22 Du ska inte mörda, och Den som mördar är skyldig inför domstolen. Jag säger er: Den som blir vred på sin broder är skyldig inför domstolen, och den som säger ’idiot’ till sin broder är skyldig inför Rådet, och den som säger ’dåre’ är skyldig och döms till det brinnande Gehenna.

1 Joh 3:15 Den som hatar sin broder är en mördare, och ni vet att ingen mördare har evigt liv i sig.

6. Matt 5:27-28 Du ska inte begå äktenskapsbrott. Jesus sa: Den som ser med begär på en kvinna har redan begått äktenskapsbrott med henne i sitt hjärta.

8. Matt 5:33-37 Du ska inte svära falskt, och: Du ska hålla din ed inför Herren. Jag säger er: Ni ska inte svära alls – varken vid himlen, för den är Guds tron, eller vid jorden, för den är pallen för hans fötter, eller vid Jerusalem, för det är den store Kungens stad. Du ska inte heller svära vid ditt huvud, för du kan inte göra ett enda hårstrå vitt eller svart. Ert ord ska vara ’ja’ eller ’nej’. Allt därutöver kommer från den onde.

Gud tar det hela längre angående vad synd är. Det räcker att vi tänker det, vi behöver faktiskt inte göra det. Synden föds i våra hjärtan om vilket skriften säger;

Jer 17:9 Bedrägligare än allt annat är hjärtat, det är obotligt sjukt. Vem kan förstå det?

Synden föds i hjärtat, vi talar ut den med vår mun och vips så ar vi syndat. Det är inget övernaturligt eller konstigt involverat i att synda. Ändå agerar många som om det vore det. Samma personer som lär sina barn att lyda, vill absolut inte själva lyda någon annan än sig själv. Det är som om vi bara väntar på att bli stora och själv bestämma.

Matt 15:10-11 Sedan kallade han till sig folket och sade till dem: "Lyssna och förstå! Det som går in i munnen gör inte människan oren. Det är det som kommer ut ur munnen som gör henne oren."

Matt 15:16-20 Jesus sade: "Förstår ni fortfarande inte? Inser ni inte att allt som går in i munnen hamnar i magen och kommer ut på avträdet? Men det som går ut ur munnen kommer från hjärtat, och det gör människan oren. För från hjärtat kommer onda tankar, mord, äktenskapsbrott, sexuell omoral, stöld, falskt vittnesbörd och hädelser. Sådant gör människan oren.

Jesus ger oss det rakt ut, I hjärtat föds synden. När vi syndar vare sig vi inte talar ut det eller vi talar ut det, så måste omvändelse till. Precis som vi lär barnen att göra som vi säger, men inte som vi gör. För sanningen är att även om vi är goda i våra egna ögon, så är det inte alltid godhet kommer ut ur oss.

Hur kan vi låta bli att tala om synd och omvändelse, då det är så centralt i vår tro? Detta ar ju talats om, om och om igen i skriften. Profeterna sa till kungen och folket att omvända sig, göra bot och bättring. Johannes döparen predikad samma sak, Jesus och apostlarna också. Faktiskt när vi läser kristen historia så var det synd och omvändelse ifrån den, det som predikades.

Men idag så talas det inte alls om synd och omvändelse. Hur tragiskt mesiga vi har blivit. Vi jamsar med för att slippa stöta oss med någon. Och om vi mot förmodan talar om synd, då tas praktexemplaret homosexualitet upp. Som om det vore den ultimata synden, eller den enda, för den skull. Men det är endast en synd bland alla andra.

Jag undrar om det kan vara så att många kristna tar det som exempel för att på något sätt rättfärdiga sin egen synd? Ett fall av, jag är i alla fall inte lika bedrövligt fallen som den där. Kanske har jag fel.

Synden kom in i världen med Adam och Evas fall, och den lever idag i högsta välmåga. Tack vare fallet är vi alla syndare. Om vi alla är syndare varför då inte tala om det, låta folk få höra och ha en chans att omvända sig.

Ibland undrar jag över Katolska kyrkans 7 dödssynder, har alltid haft svårt för den termen. Enligt standardlistan är de; 1. stolthet, 2. girighet, 3. vrede, 4. avund, 5. lust, 6. frosseri och 7. lättja, som strider mot de sju himmelska dygderna. Denna klassificering har sitt ursprung i Ökenfäderna, särskilt Evagrius Ponticus.

Vad säger bibeln oss?

1 Kor 6:9-11 Vet ni inte att orättfärdiga inte ska få ärva Guds rike? Bedra inte er själva! Varken sexuellt omoraliska eller avgudadyrkare, varken äktenskapsbrytare eller de som utövar homosexualitet eller som låter sig utnyttjas för sådant, varken tjuvar eller giriga, varken drinkare, förtalare eller utsugare ska ärva Guds rike. Sådana har några av er varit. Men ni har tvättats rena, ni har blivit helgade, ni har förklarats rättfärdiga i Herren Jesu Kristi namn och i vår Guds Ande.

Notera att Gud faktiskt även räknar upp de som förtalar i listan bland synder. Hur många av oss kristna har någonsin sagt talat illa om någon bakom deras ryggar? Men när vi påpekar synd då drar vi till med homosexualitet, det som avviker ordentligt. Men enligt Gud så avviker vi även om det endast talas illa om någon bakom dennes rygg.

Vilka konsekvenser får synden? Syndens liv är döden, d.v.s. vi hamnar i den eviga elden och blir pinade i evighet. Detta hemska ställe är från början ämnad för Satan och resten av de upproriska änglarna, inte för oss människor. Jesus dog och blödde för människosläktet.

I Hans sår och seger på Golgata finns förlåtelse från synden. Vi behöver bara tro på det. Och Jesus tog alla synder på sig själv, varenda en. Så förlåtelse finns för allting, hela vitsen med dödssynder är ju att de är oförlåtliga. Men Jesus förklarar för oss;

Matt 12:31-32 Jesus sa; All synd och hädelse ska människorna få förlåtelse för, men hädelse mot Anden kommer inte att förlåtas. Den som säger något mot Människosonen ska bli förlåten. Men den som talar mot den helige Ande kommer inte att bli förlåten, varken i den här tidsåldern eller i den kommande.

Alla synder kan vi få förlåtelse från, utom om vi hädar den Helige Ande. Låt oss som kristna hålla fanan högt och om igen tala om synd och omvändelse. Ämnet kan inte vara så känsligt att vi inte ens kan tala om det. Utan synd behövs ingen förlåtelse, och vi är inte utan synd. Skriften säger oss;

Rom 3:9-12 Ingen rättfärdig finns, inte en enda. Ingen finns som förstår, ingen som söker Gud. Alla har avfallit, alla är fördärvade. Ingen finns som gör det goda, inte en enda.

Vi är alla av samma skrot och korn, alla syndare, sitter i samma båt, vare sig vi är frälsta eller ej. Deras synd, som inte är frälsta är inte värre än våran. Om vi inbillar oss det så har Satan lyckats dupera oss ordentligt.

I en helig Guds ögon kommer vi alla till korta. Han räknar inte någon enda som god. Därför behövde Hans son Jesus lida och dö i vårt ställe, så att vi genom Jesus offer kunde få ett evigt liv. Men vi väljer. Hur kan vi välja liv eller död om ingen förkunnar det för oss? Vi måste tala, vi kan inte vara tysta. Om igen måste våra tungors band lossas och tala om synd, förlåtelse och omvändelse.
